New Elevators for a New Year

Grain elevator at Menzie, Manitoba

We wish you a very belated “happy new year” for 2022. As a late gift for the new year, here are some “new to us” grain elevators to share, and some updates on existing elevators. We have been scanning more of the Donald Hamilton collection of grain elevator photos, as well as acquiring other images, and we have lots to share. Here are the new elevators for Grain Elevators of Canada, by province or state:

Manitoba

Saskatchewan

Alberta

Minnesota

North Dakota

Growing!

As of today, there are 581 towns featured on this site. 581! It’s thanks to you, the contributors, that we’ve reached this incredible number. That’s 581 pages featuring one or more grain elevator photographs. There are still plenty of towns that had or have elevators that aren’t here yet… so please contact me if you can fill in some blanks!

Here are some statistics.

  • Saskatchewan has the most towns featured, at 275, followed by Manitoba at 178 and Alberta at 113.
  • The most common first letter of towns featured is “B” followed by “S” and “C”.
  • Only Saskatchewan has towns featured starting with “Y” or “Z”, while Manitoba has the only “Q” (Quadra).

Here’s the spreadsheet, for the data nerds like me.

There were lots of updates and new grain elevators on this site from mid March to now.

I’ve been moving pages from the Manitoba Grain Elevators site to here in preparation for retiring the MGE site. I think I will have to renew the domain name for one more year, but most of the pages on that site redirect to here now.

Thanks for reading, and special thanks to our contributors for submitting photos!

RETROactive has posted an updated list of Alberta grain elevators. According to their list, there are 110 wooden grain elevators remaining on the railway rights-of-way.

You can see photos and descriptions of Alberta’s grain elevators here on Grain Elevators of Canada. We’re always adding more – eight in March, including Cardston, Carstairs and Trochu!

Site Growth

There have been lots of additions in the first 11 days of March, 2018! Thanks to Adam Bouvier, Gary Rich, Marc Simpson and Michael Truman for their contributions this month.

The graph at right shows the growth in the site’s size since its resurrection in late November 2017. We have well over 300 grain elevators online, with more to come!

As always, your contributions are welcome – just email me at steve@traingeek.ca and we can get started.
