Not sure what happened to the hood, I'm thinking oil spiilage, the 1045 was a Saskatoon based unit, only time I ever saw it. Trains on the Winnipegosis sub usually used Winnipeg based GMD1's.
Good question about the hoppers, they used the silver and yellow Aluminum CNWX hoppers for a long time as well as 40 foot boxcars but in the end in the 90's, they used the steel hoppers. I'm guessing they didn't quite fill them up.
Glad you liked the shot, that was my very first trip to Fork River, as a brakeman in the summer of 1987.
