At one time, the city of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba boasted quite a few wooden grain elevators. Today, the only grain elevator remaining in city limits is the Richardson Milling complex (formerly Can-Oat Milling) on the west side of the city. The Tucker grain elevator is just east of the city and the Bloom elevator is just west of Portage la Prairie.

At one time, UGG had two grain elevators in Portage la Prairie. The smaller one just west of the Skyview bridge showed its former Victoria / McCabe colours through the paint in 1993. It closed in June 1994.

A second elevator served UGG for years, but was eventually replaced by the new elevator at Dundonald northwest of Portage la Prairie in 1994.

Manitoba Pool Elevators in Portage

The Manitoba Pool had three grain elevators in Portage la Prairie – A, B, and C.

The “C” elevator burned on August 23, 1976. Rumour has it that children playing with matches caused the fire.

The Pool’s “A” elevator burned on September 11, 1982.

The Pool built the Tucker grain elevator just east of the city on the CPR rail line.
